How would you feel if you had just few minutes to know if your life was going to change?
But anxiety starts much before that right? When you miss your date.
Then you head to the pharmacy to grab this wonder kit. With 10 different brands staring at you in the face suddenly anxiety creeps in again. Do you want the traditional 2 line one? Or the one that turns a negative sign into a positive one? Or if lines and signs will confuse you, should you just get the digital ones that actually display 'pregnant' or 'not'.
And as if dealing with your own anxiety is not enough, you have to deal with the reactions of sales people too. I had my first pregnancy in the US and I remember the friendly sales woman giving me a thumbs sign and wishing me luck. (But what if I was hoping for a negative?) And In India for my second one I noticed the lady at the counter scan my neck to see if I was wearing my traditional wedding locket, the mangalsutra.
Now that you bought it, should you tell anyone? Your husband? Your mom? Your best friend? Or should you just wait until you get the results?
Now anxiety makes you read the instructions at least 3 times. And maybe even memorize them. Because when you wake up groggy tomorrow morning for you first bathroom visit, you will want nothing to go wrong.
Anxiety makes sure that this one time you want to relieve yourself, will feel no relief. Some instructions suggest you 'pop it in midstream' which is not very easy for women considering how we go. Others suggest you do it in a cup and use the given dropper to actually drop a few drops on to this magic stick. Yes like a science experiment. Fun. But not when your hands are shaking.
And then anxiety's grand finale. That few (but long) minutes of waiting.
Tick Tock. Tick Tock.
While you wait, anxiety makes you do some last minute googling. Of course your phone is already propped up near the sink.
Now, the results could be a false negative, a true positive or a true negative.(Or a false positive?)
Anxiety makes you double and triple check with three different brands spread over a few days. Just to be sure.
And yes finally you know. If you are not. Then get back to work.
But if you are then -Congratulations!
You just got on to a roller coaster ride for life!
Hold tight!
Anxious, I'm sure!
Three to five minutes is all it takes for a home pregnancy test to work. To tell you the good news (or the bad?). Funny how this life changing revelation takes place in the bathroom out of all places.

DeleteWow - great post on anxiety! I remember spending at least a hundred bucks on preg kits when I was trying for my first 30 years ago. With the second I knew right away and could just wait for the doc to confirm. Hah! No more anxiety...for that anyway!!! Thanks Seena.
