#AtoZChallenge S is for 'Social (Media) Babies'

New parents are ecstatic. Our babies are the best and we are over the moon every time our bundle of joy reaches a milestone. And we want to shout it out from the roof tops.

Roof top = Social Media status update.

Every single milestone in bits and bytes. Hundreds of photos from every single angle regardless of who's interested.

We can't help it. It's just too easy.

Facebook and other Social Media sites have become so much a part of our lives that it seems only natural that everything we do has to be on it. I mean did it really happen if its not on FB? Did my baby really turn over? Did it really eat mashed bananas today?

A friend of mine created an account for her baby soon after she was born. I'm not sure how this is possible (considering FB does have some rule where one has to be 13 years or older to have an account) unless you change the birth year. She felt it was an easy way to share pictures and updates with a close circle of friends.

There is also a story about a couple (from some years ago) who used an ultrasound image as profile pic and created an account for their unborn baby. The belly-baby was connecting with friends and family and keeping everyone updated on the kicks. But apparently FB took it off.

OK maybe the baby can grow up and decide if he really wants an account. But you still can create a Facebook page for your baby.. and get 'Likes'.  (I think we all do it for the likes, BTW).

Or create a FB scrap book for your baby where you can keep all his photos in a central location. Which sounds like the same thing as keeping it in your photo album in the first place.

What do you think about sharing everything about your baby online? Do you think a baby should have a Facebook or Twitter account?

  1. very good point u have covered here, the more the "Likes" are...the more they will love their baby? reading the comments about their baby will they notice the cutest things about their baby? ---if after the "likes" and "comments" all these are happening...then i am feeling sorry for Those babies.
i would like to say ....the time you are spending in uploading pics of ur baby...invest that time for ur babies and u will feel and realize much more.

  2. Very true! There are some hilarious images online where this lady has just given birth and instead on looking at her child which the nurse is showing she is updating her phone!! :D

  3. Ye Gods! Save us from the new-mommies and all their status updates! My reply to your Q is a big NO! Let kids grow up and decide when they want an account...a social media one! I am sure many of the kids would be pretty embarrassed now if they saw what goofy images their parents shared with the world when they were tots! Cheers

  4. I am horrified ! As it is our babies are made to perform like monkeys why subject them to media glare? And what about the evil eye ? There were enough old aunties in our building whose gaze used to terrify me......

    1. Now I'm wondering if E for Evil eye would have been an interesting topic. I am so curious about it. Every time I rubbish it, it actually wreaks havoc. Is it a coincidence? Does envy create it? Does it exist? or do we create it?

  5. I love facebook for seeing updates on babies but I don't need to see hundreds of photos - save your album on your laptop or phone and just post a few photos every now and then - and nothing that will embarrass the poor child in years to come :)

  6. I am absolutely against this concept of running a social media account on behalf of the baby! WHy expose the individual to such things at this early age especially when they dont understand anything and who knows, may even resent it later in life!
You have raised a pertinent topic Seena....

    1. I was very curious when I read about it.. It seems cute.. but we never think about whether the baby will be annoyed when it grows up.

  7. A childhood friend of mine created a page for her dog using an app called Facebook, but I know I saw it on Facebook, so I'm not sure how that worked. I haven't seen it in a while...but I guess if your dog was over 13 that would work! Maybe...although now FB is so strict, they'd probably take it down.

  9. Are you serious? Account of a baby who is still in the womb and can be accessed via ultra sound? Where are we going? I have of mine, who made an account of his newly born son!
I find it hilarious and waste of time for sure!
It was an interesting take though! :)

    1. Well, the parents to be opened up an account for their unborn baby. Profile pic is an ultra sound. and they basically updated her status for her in the first person. The idea makes me smile...But I dont think I can do it.

  10. Too many parents show pics of their kids on public platforms. As an aunt, I had to even pull back when I realized how public a platform it is.

  11. As for myself I found social media absolutely draining. I try to limit myself as much as possible, except of of course for the A to Z Challenge!

  12. Accounts for unborn babies is just weird! And a bit creepy. And how are new mums finding time to upload pic of babies on FB?? They hardly get time to take a loo break by themselves last I knew!
